INTERVIEW FOR UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN HOSPITAL

I was contacted by Angela Selar to conduct an interview regarding Meniere’s Disease/Vestibular Disorders and patient protocol. The purpose of the interview was to assist her by contributing to her research and presentation to the medical specialist at Michigan State University Hospital. I must say I was truly honored by her request. She is constructing a PowerPoint presentation to provide to that regent board for Menieres protocol. She has been working with the head of research for the hospital in an effect to truly raise awareness with the medical professionals. Her goal is to have her work be an instrument to educate doctors on the real struggles, concerns, and patient based care for better protocol of Meniere’s patients. Angela has a background in teaching and is a warrior herself. This has helped her tremendously in her journey.

Angela: First, what type of doctor diagnosed you; a PCP or an ENT? How long did it take to get a proper diagnosis?

Gina Marie: ENT. We can not clarify when. Reason being is that I was diagnosed in May 2001 with an inner ear infection. I was on a steroid and antibiotics. In June, I had my first experience with tinnitus and vertigo. Thinking I was misdiagnosed, I saw another ENT. That ENT diagnosed me in June and a second opinion with a third ENT confirmed Menieres but stated, I may have very well had it with Inner Ear Infection. Final answer would be July 2001. I was fortunate. My ENTs in this area have knowledge of the disease so unlike other warriors, it was 3 months. Most warriors go years misdiagnosed or with no diagnosis at all.

Angela: When did your first episode happen? What age? Have you always had these symptoms?

Gina Marie: June of 2001. I was feeling better from the inner ear infection pain but, still felt something was wrong. I was tired all the time (fatugue), having trouble focusing (brain fog) and a slight noise I couldn’t explain (tinnitus) in the left ear. One day in June I started laughing at a joke someone told and tilted my head back a bit. The vertigo hit so fast and so hard that I will never forget the fear I felt. Most MD warriors never forget the first time. I was 24. I did not have MD symptoms before May 2001 possible inner ear infection. However, I did have chronic ear infections for most my childhood years. They stopped around age 13.

Angela: Thank you for being so detailed.

Gina Marie: You’re welcome. You are my first interview and I’m honored. I have several podcast invites waiting but, I took you first. (hugs indicated)

Angela: Awe thanks! Ok, I know your time is valuable. 3 Chief health complaints with meniere’s? Or 5.

Gina Marie: I don’t fully understand the question.

Angela: List in order from 1 to 5 these symptoms

vertigo nausea
Fatigue
brain fog
anxiety
Pain
Other…

… as chief complaints. 1 being the worst. What aspects of this disease are worse for you?

Gina Marie: For me, I believe it is different than most warriors:
1. Head Pressure
2. Anxiety while driving
3. Unbalanced/Dizziness
4. Fatigue/exhaustion
5. Violent, quick vertigo attacks

Angela: Tubes?

Gina Marie: Summer 2004. Unsuccessful.

Angela: Surgery? Shunt decompression?

Gina Marie: I am not a candidate. I was diagnosed bilateral.

Angela: (Indicates thumbs up) That was my next question. {laughs out loud} But, you knew that anyway.

Gina Marie: Yes, I did. {Laughs}

Angela: Barometer weather changes bother you?

Gina Marie: Yes. Barometer weather changes and emotional stress are my biggest triggers. They are also least talked about, which is concerning.

Angela: Yes…yes…yes!! I would like to change THAT. As well as other things, so speak up. Tell me what you think is important. We have an in dear, use it!!!!

Angela: Do you track the weather and barometric pressure to predict when you are going to feel well?

Gina Marie: No. Ain’t nobody got time for that! (Laughs at my own sarcasm). However, newly diagnosed should! They should also keep a diary and start folders for all copies of test results and doctor’s information. I stopped in 2010 after 5 expandables!

Gina Marie: Going back, I want to state a few concerns.

Angela: Please, give me your input. What doctors want from patients…logs!!!!

Gina Marie: I am concerned about the information put out on the Internet. The triggers always listed are alcohol, smoking, caffeine, salt. None are my triggers unless already flared. Why must new warriors scroll so far and have to search so deep for these:
Weather changes
Emotional Stress
Allergies

Also, one third of us are autoimmune deficient. Why aren’t doctors aware enough of this fact so when warriors get unrelated symptoms, they know they could also get other diseases like Fybro, Crohns, MS?

Why do you never see Chiropractor suggestions when it’s proven in most cases, Upper Cervical Adjustments can give relief?

MAIN CONCERN: why are warriors never given, that I know of, hope for a quality of life! Suggest something! Facebook support groups, therapist, life coaches, something! Do you realize people have committed suicide?

Or ME, Gina Marie. Just going to throw that out there. {laughs}

Angela: You totally nailed every bit of my concern and yes, I too have been to that point. I think a great many of us have been to that point.

Angela: Do you wear glasses are contacts?Do you get nystagmus?

Gina Marie: I do not wear classes. No, I do not have Nystagmus however, I do have another vestibular order, PPPD. I also have Iritis.

On a side note, I also have Fybro, Crohns, Sacriolitis, survived melanoma 2x and 6mm Lipoma in center of brain.

Gina Marie: Feelings: despair and worthlessness should be added to your diagram.

Angela: I see the pppd is a newly defined vestibular diagnosis. I will do some reading.

Angela: You definitely have a world of hurt going on there girl!

Gina Marie: That’s okay. It makes me fight harder. I know exactly why I have all these issues.

Angela: Yup! Perfectly stated. In some respects, I do feel like with this that there are some gifts given. Like appreciation, love, happiness, hope, and knowledge. Okay, back to the next question. Have you been diagnosed with vestibular migraine? Oh, and totally agree with mind gut connect.

Gina Marie: No I have not. I was told my migraines are connected to my PPPD and fall under vestibular category.

Angela: Cervical c1-c4 issue?

Gina Marie: Car accident. Unrelated. However, adjustments help my MD greatly.

Angela: How long ago? Before or after age 24?

Gina Marie: Accident was at age 21.

Angela: You know that’s connected to your Menieres?

Gina Marie: For some, yes, it is connected. Not in my case.

Angela: Tinnitus? 24/7? Loud during attacks? Comes and goes with the weather?

Gina Marie: My tinnitus is constant but at times for no known reason, can sound like an orchestra. Flare ups usually follow after.

Gina Marie: Now I have a question. Why did you pick me for this interview?

Angela: Not to sound weird, but I find you intriguing. I like your personality. You have a good handle on your symptoms. You have a good knowledge base. You also run a bunch of websites (sic) about vestibular disorders.

THE LEAKY GUT CONNECTION

If you are looking for MLM (Multilevel Marketing), a magical pill or the cure for your illness; you will not find any of those answers here. However, this article will give you more insight, awareness, answers and a guide to where you can find affordable solutions to help your gut health and immune system.
There are so many factors that will eventually come into play with the title of this article. The gut and brain work together, taking power over your body and your mind. Increased intestinal permeability (aka “Leaky Gut”) and it’s connection to brain function, inflammation and autoimmune disease; has become a hot topic. My goal is to attempt to simplify the complicated. You must first know the basic terminology and definitions before you can comprehend the massive overload of information.

What is Meniere’s Disease?

Meniere’s Disease is a disorder that affects the inner ear. The inner ear is responsible for hearing and balance. The condition causes vertigo, the sensation of spinning. It also leads to hearing problems and a ringing sound in the ear. [1]

However, look at the actual definition:

NOUN
1. a disease of unknown cause affecting the membranous labyrinth of the ear, causing progressive deafness and attacks of tinnitus and vertigo.

(My ENT’s explanation: You have fluid in your inner ear (balance center) and fluid in your brain. One is high in potassium and one is high in sodium. These fluids are not suppose to mix. There are membranes to stop the interaction. When you have Meniere’s Disease or vertigo related illness, these membranes start to stretch. The cause is unknown. The more they stretch, the more the fluid makes contact, thus causing your balance to become unsteady. Once stretched opened, full vertigo occurs. Thus, why the shunt surgery has had much success. If you’re bilateral, the surgery is not an option.)

What is Chronic Disease?
Chronic disease: A disease that persists for a long time. A chronic disease is one lasting 3 months or more, by the definition of the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics. Chronic diseases generally cannot be prevented by vaccines or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear. [2]

What is autoimmune disease?
Autoimmune disease is a disease in which the body’s immune system attacks healthy cells. The immune system normally guards against germs like bacteria and viruses. When it senses these foreign invaders, it sends out an army of fighter cells to attack them. Basically, when you have auto immune disease, your body attacks itself. It sees an organ, muscle, joints or skin as a virus. The body then releases an overload of auto antibodies and goes to war on the healthy cells. [3]

Author’s Note: Meniere’s actually made a list somewhere!

I was told during my MD (Meniere’s Disease) diagnosis in 2001, that the MD was autoimmune related. Years went by and I was diagnosed with more conditions, continually hearing the words “autoimmune disease.” I now have Meniere’s Disease (MD), Fibromyalgia, Crohn’s Disease, Sacroiliitis, Iritis and survived Melanoma skin cancer two times. The fact that one third of MD patients have autoimmune disease [5] has become even more intriguing as I learn about the gut connection.

What is Leaky Gut?
A condition where the lining of the small intestine has become damaged. Tiny holes are torn in the gut lining. This allows foreign bodies and toxins to “leak into the blood stream-causing symptoms and disease-especially inflammatory disease. [6]
Other causes include long term medication use, food allergies, stress and gut infections. Leaky gut has been linked to other psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. Additionally, studies show that the cause of food allergies, low energy, joint pain, autoimmune conditions, and slow metabolism could be leaky gut toxins spreading through your body. [7] This is where the gut and mind also going hand in hand. Therefore leading to the popular phrase; your health starts and ends with your gut.

Putting it together for you:
Many warriors are suffering from bowel movement issues. They are so focused on the greater diagnosis that they ignore the issue completely or write it off as just another side affect of their diseased life. Moreover, doctors do not even ask this question during evaluation and we do not think to mention it. Why would we? How are we suppose to know that the gut is interacting at all times with our medical conditions and our brain? In 2005, after being diagnosed with Sacrolitiis (swelling of sacrum), the doctor specifically asked me if I was having any problems with my stomach and/or bathroom routine. It was definitely an issue I was having and she referred me to a Gastroenterologist. After a colonoscopy, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. If you have any of the above listed diseases in this article and are also struggling with your stomach, you are more than likely battling the daily affects of leaky gut.

How to better your Leaky Gut and overall Health:
*First and foremost, I always suggest you see a specialist. You should make sure you did not develop yet another disease that may require medical attention.*

#1: Find if you have any food triggers. Most warriors need a gluten free diet and do not even know it. Dairy may be a cause and effect for you. All warriors should avoid processed and refined junk foods.
#2: Eat foods that promote the growth of healthy gut bacteria, including fruits, cultured dairy products, healthy fats, lean meats and fibrous and fermented vegetables. Also, eat probiotic foods such as:
-Yogurt (Greek yogurt is best or one that clearly says priobiotic). You should also have yogurt 20 minutes before taking your medications.
-Kefir -Sauerkraut -Tempeh -Kimchi’ -Pickles-Traditional Buttermilk -Natto
#3: Reduce stress levels.
#4: Sleep and Rest are imperative.
#5: Add supplements for healing and maintenance. L-glutamone, Omega3 and Priobiotics.

My personal experiment:
During my research, I reached out to Marty, a former pharmacist, now advocate for natural healing and owner of Burman’s Health Shop. I started 2 products on March 1, 2019 after discussing Leaky Gut in detail with him.

I was looking for relief of:
*Inflammation
*joint pain
*pain and difficultly with bowel movement
*brain fog
*anxiety
*crohns
*fibromyalgia
*overall health improvement

Please note that according to my hours of research, it takes about six (6) months to get the gut back to the healthiest state possible. I started using Glutamine Powder in my yogurt and fresh berry blend morning shakes. I use Plant Fusion in the afternoon as a partial meal supplement. Plant Fusion has Probiotics and Omega3 in one, along with other very healthy nutrients.
It has been just a little over thirty (30) days and I STAND BEHIND THE SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME I HAVE HAD PERSONALLY ALREADY. I no longer have to run to a bathroom, endure painful cramping, or deal with the bloating feeling every time I eat a substantial meal. I would say the other issues I mentioned above are at about a 60% success rate.

My medical thoughts:

As usual, there is more substantial evidence by warriors then there is by the medical field. But let’s be honest, we always have known more because we live it; not learn it. We are all the same but, different. There is no doubt in my mind that our health begins and ends with our gut. To think that all this time, I have had toxins leaking into my blood stream is extremely concerning. Your gut is most likely now like a strainer. A bunch of holes just allowing these toxins to drain out underneath. By fixing that, you are helping your overall health and may just assist your body in gaining relief to many of your symptoms from your disease(s).

Don’t Trifle With Me

Dear Chronic Illness:
Every morning when my feet hit the floor, I want to hear you say, “Oh shit! She’s up!”. You have taken so much from me and I’m sure you feel some sense of pride. Only a bully picks and preys on the week. Well, Im not even a bit apologetic when I say, “I’m not the one to be trifled with”. Just like any coward, you suckered punched me trying to get my children ready for school. No doubt it was a hard hit, spinning the room so quickly. However, you never expected me to hold on, breath and then throw a roundhouse kick by still getting them off to school. Being angry with me, you knocked me to the floor as soon as I got home. In those moments, I had time to think though. You’ve had me in this position before. I remember the days I use to give up and let you win. I want you to know, those days are over. The up kick I threw knocked you back to your place of hell as I not only got up; I cleaned up breakfast while dizzy just to spite you. You remind me of a nagging ex that just won’t go away. It’s so pathetic to be honest. I know you saw my tears drop as I cried out to my God, “just make it stop!”. You figured what a perfect time to try and finish me for the day. You threw a hard combo. My ears got loud, my head hurt and I tobbled a bit. Impressive. Not! I giggle now as I took all those hits YET, I didn’t get knocked out. You see, you can knock me down, but you will never knock me out. It will be you who rings the bell, not me. With that, enjoy my throat punch that ended the fight. My couch is so comfy and I will fight by resting. It’s a beautiful day for a movie anyway, so thank you. There are many things you will take and many things I can’t control. The one thing I will never give you is my life. You can’t have my positive mind or my beautiful soul. Sorry to disappoint you. On that note, please understand this is my ring, my fight and I will always win. Im just sitting in the corner of that ring getting cleaned up for the next round. See you soon.

One Day

Most people think the most important day of the year is January 1st. That special day seems to help individuals set new goals; bringing in the year with a whole new perspective and attitude. They make resolutions and promises with the thought of, “this will be MY year”. Sadly, the real goal for most is to accomplish the goal they set the year before, which they should have done the year prior to that, because of the plans they made prior to that year as well. Usually by the end of February, all of it becomes one day.

One day you’re going to really get to the gym and work on your health. One day you’re going to start attending ministry again in the attempt to become closer to your God. One day you’re going to leave that abusive relationship. One day you’re going to climb out of that black hole of misery into the light of happiness. Unfortunately for most, one day never happens either.

If you truly want to succeed in life, one day must become today. Anything else is just procrastinating. You can’t keep distorting your reality and think that change will come. Change takes courage, discipline, determination and true will power. Most importantly, you have to be willing to feel pain. Almost every big change you make in your life will first require pain of some sort. Whether its emotional, spiritual or physical; no doubt pain will be your biggest challenge. Why? Because we like comfortablility. In order to make a real difference in your life, you have to step out of your comfort zone. This is where pain and fear waits to push you back into failure. You’ll start to blame everyone and everything for your short comings and crawl back into your comfort world where nothing happens and nothing grows.

Learn to face yourself. The most important conversation you’ll ever have, is the one you have with yourself. Your voice never leaves you. It’s there when you wake up, it’s there throughout the day and it’s there when you fall asleep.

If you’re thinking this article is not for you because you’re content on where you are in life; I can assure you that you are just comfortable with being the best amongst mediocrity. We all have weaknesses to challenge in order to continue to grow. If you don’t stay hungry for life, then you’re never truly living. There are very few people in this world that ever faced all their fears, all their set backs, all their insecurities and went beyond mediocrity. All they did was convince themselves that not facing those things and not challenging themselves to overcome them, gave them a comfortable life. In reality, when we face those things head on and we go through the struggles and pain, we get to see the other side. Waiting there is true achievement and the feeling that you are the baddest damn person on this earth. Doesn’t matter if that’s true or not. Just as long as you believe it and believe in yourself. Make one day….TODAY!

Unleash Your Demon

I do not handle constructive criticism well. It’s something I’ve attempted to change and continue to fail at miserably. It’s a demon I’ve held onto for so many years because I’ve grown content with protecting my emotions.

There is only one person in my life, that when he gives me advice on that level, I feel safe to respect the insight and feedback. My godfather is a highly intelligent and honorable man. His career requires many hours of reading and writing. Last night he told me he was proud of me starting this site. However, he also bluntly stated that some articles were too long. He explained that after five minutes, I have lost the reader. Our attention spans as human beings is three to five minutes. Shortly after this discussion, we were listening to an individual speak. About ten minutes passed and I glanced at my godfather. We both giggled as he held up three fingers. I got his point so now, let me make mine.

Constructive criticism is really words of advice, from an experienced individual, while having your best interest at heart. Many of you, like myself, dislike constructive criticism. The reason is quite simple. You spent years listening and trusting the wrong people with the wrong intentions. While seeking advice, encouragement and support; you were beaten down with words and your very existence degraded to the core. You took chances and when you fell, the people you loved told you that you were worthless, lazy, a faker and a loser. At some point over time, you twisted the meaning of constructive criticism with being made to feel wrong as a person. You need to sort people out in your life and evaluate or Reset Your Table. If their motives and intentions are to hurt you, they need to be dismissed or put at arms length. If they want you to succeed in your goals, your health and your life; seat them close. Either way, it’s time to unlock your grip and unleash your demon.

Your Doorway

There is a great meme I’ve seen regarding our doorway of life. It basically says, and I’m paraphrasing here, “if you want to come in or out of my life, the door is always open. My only request is that you don’t stand at the door blocking traffic”. Although it’s a touching thought, I wonder how many of you are blocking your own doorway? I’ve written many articles on how to dismiss negative people or things in your life. I’ve written a few about who and what should or should not be in your life in an attempt to positively impact your lifestyle. I’ve told my followers to always evaluate others to determine the best course of action to move forward. Now, it’s time to evaluate yourself.

Linda contacted me requesting help on a letter to a company she was with many years on a part-time basis. She sent me two emails; her story and her drafted complaint letter. After reading the background she sent, there was no doubt in my mind that Linda was being harrassed and treated in ways that go against the policies of the Department of Labor. Being a former Paralegal and a creative writer, the letter would be a no brainer for me. However, her draft was very emotional. I would have to start from scratch for an important professional complaint like she requested. Before I started, I decided to call Linda. I had a gut feeling that she was on the fence and really wanted to be done with the stress of this job. When I spoke with her, I asked her if she knew what she truly wanted. I wasn’t surprised to hear that she was miserable after dealing with the drama, scolding and harassment of the general managers for awhile at this point. I believed, and she agreed, that her drafted letter was therapeutic however; this was not what she wanted in her life. She had fallen a little off course but then, she validated her worth through self examination. She was, in essence, blocking her own doorway. I’m happy to say I drafted her Resignation instead, which was handed over today. The CEO will receive a copy by certified mail regarding her treatment as an employee by his higher ups. Linda was promised a healthy work environment. She will most likely never even hear the word, “sorry” by the people who degraded her. How many of you have a bunch of broken promises and apologies in your life right now? If I lived for every promise made to me, I wouldn’t be living. Evaluate and ask yourself, “what do I really want?”. At the end of the day, your choices create your happiness. Whether it’s friendships, romantic involvement, employment or hobbies; are you making the best decisions for you? If you’re frustrated and miserable all the time, you need to take a hard look at your life. If you’re waiting on promises and apologies, then it’s time to stop blocking your doorway. Seek the truth within and find your happiness. It’s not only a one man job; it’s an inside job!

Moving Forward

I’m so excited to announce that I just set-up a YouTube channel. Moving into different phases of this wonderful journey has been scary yet, absolutely amazing. I will continue to write my inspiration and motivation however; now you will be able to see, hear and truly comprehend my passion in helping others balance their illness and life. The first video will be released this coming week.

Let Them Leave

I usually don’t write at this hour but man, do I have some preaching to do tonight!

A member from the group, Meniere’s and Vertigo Without Borders, made a statement while in private conversation. Suze DeAndrea wrote, “so conclusion may be that we’re better off alone?” My simplified answer was, “I dont think it’s we are better off alone. I think we have grown so use to depending on our own strength that we do not have the tolerance for anything less from others.”

Most people do not know how to handle us. They don’t realize that people like us are dependantly independent. Confusing to some readers, I know. If I had a dollar for everytime I heard that I don’t make sense, I’d be rich. For us, we don’t have the time to worry about the time of making sense. We must keep going and keep moving forward. We have learned to thrive off of our positives because nagatives can destroy us competely. So, we come off misunderstood, confusing and sometimes even down right mean. We hear what others have to say and we do care. I can promise we care more for others than they can possibly begin to comprehend. And maybe, that is an issue. We see what they can’t because of how we live. What others fail to see is that time for us has a different meaning. It’s not that we think our time is more valuable than theirs or their thoughts. It’s that we have to think about quality more than quantity. We wish we had time. We don’t know how much time we have to get all the important things done and tend to take some things about others for granit. We’ve been through hell and we worry about bigger things in life now; viewing many disagreements as petty. We worry about the security of our future, 401k and life insurance while vacuuming, doing laundry and taking care of the kids. We worry about the people all around us more than we worry about ourselves. We worry about their future and try to help them become better than what they see for themselves. We divide our thinking into priorities because we don’t know how much time we get from day to day. When people tell us how they feel about us, we become defensive. The reason is simple. We are faking being well and we are holding everything together silently while we fight….time. So, excuse us for being tougher than the usual person. Most of us are cut from a different type of cloth. We are warriors of either illness, life or both. We love with our entire being and trust too easily that people can trust our value. They don’t make material like us anymore. We don’t make sense because we’re not trying to. We’re trying to make a life out of broken pieces with no time to ourselves. My father said, “your heart will be both a blessing and a curse”. He was right.

We all struggle in life. We all have storms we must get through. Financial storms, emotional storms, love storms, spiritual storms, sick storms and secret storms. The worst is when all the storms meet and you have a hurricane happening right before you. You can’t see in a hurricane and you start worrying about what’s going to happen before it happens. This is when you need to close your eyes, take a deep breath and embrace it. You must now walk by faith and not by sight. This is also the time that people you need most, usually decide to walk away. If they can walk away from you- Let. Them. Walk.

I don’t care about what they’ve done for you, how wonderful they are, how long they were around, what the situation was or who did what. If people want to run away from you- Let. Them. Run.

Do not talk another person into caring about you, staying attached to you, loving you or staying with you. If a person wants to leave you- Let. Them. Leave. Your destiny and dreams are not tied to the person who left you and nothing just happens. If they walked away from you, it’s no accident. If they left you, it’s no accident. If you begged and pleaded to make it work and they turned their head, it’s no accident. Accept it, wash your hands of it and keep going. If you’re dealing with hateful while you’re being faithful; you got to let it go.

Stop begging people to stay! If they can’t handle differences, your mistakes, their mistakes, emotions and life’s obstacles then Let. Them. Go. Whatever you were meant to have, will eventually come to you. If you think your human will can out do divine will, you have done lost your mind! You’re being moved and that’s no accident either. A Pastor really moved me this morning with what I’m trying to reach you with right here. His words brought peace and balance. When you feel the pain, say nothing. When you think of how they hurt and betrayed you, say nothing. When you think about your own offenses, say nothing. When you think about how broke you are, how damaged you’ve become, your heart breaks, your trials, your obstacles and whatever other storm you’re going through; say nothing. If you read this too late, you begged them to stay and they didn’t want you anymore, shout NOTHING!…..

Because “Nothing just happens.”

Great things are coming your way. Trust and believe that. You’ll see.

Our Dirty Little Secret

I taught my children that there are good secrets and then there are bad secrets. A good secret is keeping quiet about presents or surprises for the ones you love. A bad secret usually consists of wrong doing; either by you or by someone else. Their little minds can’t grasp the concept of anything in between. But, as adults, we certainly can.

Many warriors of Meniere’s Disease and Vertigo fall into this category. We do seek awareness openly hoping for more support and research. Sixty-nine (69) million of us secretly fight everyday. We have grown so use to the beast that we don’t even tell anyone when its ugly head turns. We fear judgment, lack of understanding, and lack of compassion. Our only light in this darkness is knowing at some point, the attack will stop and we will carry on. This light is ironically inspired by the secret hell we live in. Unless you are a warrior, we don’t expect understanding of this concept. Our expectations of others in our life sometimes eventually dies out with multiple disappointments. Therefore, it turns into our dirty little secret.

This morning started out wonderful. My best friend, Deanna, took a lot of weight off my chest. She is not a vertigo warrior but, she is a life warrior. She tries to understand this disease as best she can. She may not know vertigo but, she knows that anymore stress could cause a full Meniere’s attack for me and take the rest of my hearing. She stretched her resources all the way from Florida with a couple pushes of a button, taking a huge burden off my mind.

Unfortunately for me, I’m writing this article from my bed anyway. As I got up from my office chair, my world started to spin. The attack was fast and furious. As I sat on the floor crying, holding my ears; all I kept repeating was, “please God! No!” In those moments, I hated myself. This is also something we can’t explain but other warriors can feel the actual words they just read. When I heard the dogs barking, a relief came over my entire being. I beat the affects expected by my doctor. I can’t possibly express just how vital it is for us to to stay away from our biggest trigger-emotional stress.

Someone in my private group yesterday, Meniere’s and Vertigo Without Borders, asked about an old article I had written. They were truly struggling and needed the inspiration. I wrote articles before on the people in your life. Some are supportive and you need them at your table. Some you will have to decipher whether they are wicked or just weak. Others you may have to put at arms length because ridding them from your life is not an option. Did you ever hear the saying, “don’t be deceived. The devil was once an angel”? These are the ones you need to be extremely careful with. They will support you in aspects such as doctor appointments, chores, driving, and tell you things you want to hear at the time. But when push comes to shove, they will disregard everything and sacrafice your emotional well being for their own self-image and selfish needs. They will kick your pedestal out from under you so fast that you’ll be lying there completely feeling broken. They will play on words that will play your mind and actually make you second guess your self-worth. Unfortunately, sometimes, this is the person who has claimed their undying love for you. At no time will your tears, feelings or hurt change anything. The emotional stress will change everything though and not for the better. If someone truly loves you, they would invest their loyalty to you emotionally before anything else. They would want to hear you and they would understand and appreciate your efforts to better their hardships even when you’re going through your own.

What to do? First, get up! You are not made of glass and therefore, you can’t be broken. You’re going to have to look at things you don’t want to see. This will hurt like hell. I will not sugar coat that fact. You’re about to go through a process but, you will make it through if you believe in who you are, not who that person is betraying you to be. That’s their own crap, which usually has carried over on to you at some point. That’s not you! You’re better than that. In order to get to the light, you are going to have to walk through hell. Whether it’s vertigo or life, you can do it and you will make it. You’re scared? Nothing is more scary then continuing to try to explain yourself constantly to protect yourself from someone’s twisted reality of you. Your love and loyality to them will not budge their over thinking or take off their blinders. So, walk it scared! On your travel, start taking back your life, your peace, your positivity and your worth. Eventually, you will look back and just see smoke. I’ve been here before after fourteen hard years and I can promise you the further you walk, the more clear your vision will get. Take a good look in the mirror. If all you see is yourself, that person didn’t deserve to be next to you in the first place. At the end of the day, nobody will go as hard for you as YOU. The tears will eventually subside and something else will take its place.

The sad truth about vertigo and life is that sometimes our light is inspired from the secret hell we live in. It’s our dirty little secret. As I lay here alone scared to death with tears flowing, I can feel another attack coming. Scared or not, I’m going to okay, just not today. And so will you.
